Salute to the Colonel

Posted By on February 14, 2009

After a doing little digging, I now have the facts on the sad demise of the Sandbach town cat.  The Colonel, as he was named by the folk who work and live on and around the cobbles, was only five years old when he succumbed to health problems, which had ‘dogged’ him since kittenhood.

Attempts by the local vet to cure the Colonel failed and sadly he recently passed away.  There is a theory amongst the staff at Bridgfords that the Colonel was saddened by the tearing up of the square to re-set the cobbles, and that his spirit faded as the renovation work began.  According to local sources, he has now been laid to rest beneath the new earthworks in the square, so that his spirit may watch over the citizens of Sandbach for years to come.

I shall now be changing the name of the cat in my new novel The Mirror of His Soul from ‘Alfie’ to ‘The Colonel’ in honour of Sandbach’s most famous furry citizen.

Long live the Colonel!  I’m sure there’s a story to be told in full here.  Watch this space…

In the meantime, why not relax over half-term with a free book – download book one of the epic Song of the Elves saga, A Shadow Falls today from this website.

Sighting

Posted By on February 7, 2009

A few weeks back I paid tribute to the Sandbach town cat gone missing presumed dead – or is he?

The other night, following a few delightful hours amongst great company in the L.C., I set off back into the biting cold night and as I left the cobbles saw a familiar shape emerging from the rear of the Bear on the Square.  An old moggy, looking worse for wear but very much alive scampered across my path – in the dark I couldn’t be sure, but it looked to me very much like the feline friend of Sandbach seen so often in Bridgfords window.  I could be wrong, but does the Sandbach Town cat live on?

I will investigate further.  Meanwhile, we are in the process of preparing to put a sample chapter of The Mirror of His Soul on the website – the final draft just needs a few minor tweaks.

I’m aiming to bring The King’s Blades, book two of The Song of the Elves to you by autumn.  Hang in there!

More news soon on how you can buy a hard copy of A Shadow Falls – although don’t forget the book is yours for free as a download from this website.

Up the Elves!

Driven by History

Posted By on February 1, 2009

I am currently re-drafting the beginning of my latest novel, The Mirror of His Soul.  The action opens in Cheshire, and I’ve been spending a lot of time in the market towns along the Staffordshire border researching the various locations and venues for early scenes in the novel.

The Roman, Saxon and Civil War history here also provided inspiration for characters and scenes in A Shadow Falls, while the plentiful Cheshire oaks fringing the fields first gave me my vision for Farsee Manor.  Somewhere about the sleepy market town of Sandbach stands Kirik’s oak.  I go there sometimes and look in to his future. Dark times lie ahead for the half-elf.  You’ll be able to read for yourself in the King’s Blades coming soon…

Inspiration

In Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury, a young man and an old lady find a kind of gentle love for each other based on shared company, coffee and cake.  Each separately wonders about what might have been if God hadn’t been so cruel to put them on the earth decades apart.  At least they coincide briefly, their meetings enough to affirm for them that there is someone for everyone – you just need to look long and hard enough.  Its interesting to see this same theme explored in the  Brad Pitt movie, The Curse of Benjamin Button, and its a theme I’m playing with in my new novel The Mirror of His Soul.  The protaganist in my book flirts with the idea that a love lost might be regained by following the most impossible adventure through the past.  I’ll be putting an extract from the book on the website soon.

Meanwhile, work on Song of the Elves continues – Kirik is growing up, but the rural idyll of Farsee Manor has been broken beyond repair…

Up the elves!

Thanks and tribute

I was lucky enough to take part in a workshop with poet Cliff Yates recently and would like to thank Cliff for  encouraging my students in their writing and inspiring us all with his poetry and group activities.  Some of the work produced in the session has left me with ideas for future stories.

I would also like to pay tribute to the Sandbach town cat, which passed away recently.  The moggy, which lived alternatively in the Bear on the Square and Bridgfords window actually features in my latest novel, The Mirror of His Soul.  I’ll be completing this stand alone sci-fi novel in between editing The King’s Blades – looks like it’ll be a busy 2009.

Long Live the Elves!

If you’ve just reached the end of A Shadow Falls and want to know what happens next, fear not, the next part is on its way.

Having recently completed the final edit of A Shadow Falls, I am now turning my attention to Book Two, The King’s Blades.  This originally had a working title of Sons of the Dragon and I completed it along with book three, Sins of the Father twelve months ago.  Progress should be fairly swift on books two and three as a result of all my earlier drafts and I look forward to bringing these to you in the new year.

To end the year on an exciting note, Nick and I are currently exploring ways of letting you get your hands on a paperback copy of A Shadow Falls.  Watch this space for more info on this project.

Finally, thanks to all of you who are downloading the chapters and sharing this first foray in to publishing.  I appreciate your support and I’d love to know what you think of the tale so far.

There are many miles for Kirik and Eidur to travel yet.  I hope you’ll be along for the full ride.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all my readers.  Up the elves in ’09!

If you’re enjoying the book, don’t forget to send in your feedback, as Dave loves to hear what you think of it.
