After a doing little digging, I now have the facts on the sad demise of the Sandbach town cat. The Colonel, as he was named by the folk who work and live on and around the cobbles, was only five years old when he succumbed to health problems, which had ‘dogged’ him since kittenhood.
Attempts by the local vet to cure the Colonel failed and sadly he recently passed away. There is a theory amongst the staff at Bridgfords that the Colonel was saddened by the tearing up of the square to re-set the cobbles, and that his spirit faded as the renovation work began. According to local sources, he has now been laid to rest beneath the new earthworks in the square, so that his spirit may watch over the citizens of Sandbach for years to come.
I shall now be changing the name of the cat in my new novel The Mirror of His Soul from ‘Alfie’ to ‘The Colonel’ in honour of Sandbach’s most famous furry citizen.
Long live the Colonel! I’m sure there’s a story to be told in full here. Watch this space…
